Do You Know What Causes A Panic Disorder? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mike Selvon

by Mike Selvon

When someone notices a baby about to fall out of his or her highchair, panic sets in, encouraging immediate action. Driving in a blizzard, being pushed through a crowd in Times Square, standing atop the Empire State Building, walking into a funeral home or finding out a loved one has been cheating are all cases that may create panic or anxiety in any person.

However, for some, the fear of panic becomes so great and symptoms so strong that they begin to alter their behavioral patterns to avoid anxiety. Of the 2 to 6 million Americans who suffer from panic anxiety, it is estimated that about 5% have a full blown panic disorder.

So what causes a person's first panic attack, which could later lead to the full scale panic disorder? Researchers have found a few clues regarding what may trigger this seemingly sudden and inexplicable feeling of terror and worry. Some scientists purport that most patients are under a lot of stress and one final and almost insignificant thing sets a person off.

Other scientists believe that some people are naturally predisposed to hereditary panic attacks. Yet a third school of thought says that panic attack disorder sets off when one's "fight or flight" response gets triggered by false alarms, which become learned alarms over time, evoking future panic attacks.

There are several other intriguing statistics to consider. First, women are twice as likely to develop panic attack anxiety as men. Two additional studies found that identical twins are more likely to both suffer from panic attack disorder, whereas fraternal twins are not.

These studies suggest that there may, in fact, be biological ties to panic, although the genetic markers have yet to be identified. Whether it's a cause or effect is not clear, but 50 to 60% of those who suffer from panic attacks also suffer from depression; 45% of panic attack patients were victims of sexual abuse; 35% of sufferers have alcohol or substance abuse problems; and 26% of patients have incapacitating agoraphobia, which is a fear of public places.

To stop anxiety, doctors usually prescribe fast-acting antidepressants or sedatives during the initial phase of treatment. However, there is always a worry or concern that people may become addicted to the panic attack medication when used as a quick fix.

A much more long-term panic disorder treatment plan is to attend cognitive behavioral therapy or psychotherapy sessions, which usually show improvement within 8 to 10 weeks. Without treatment, the panic attacks can be quite debilitating for the sufferer.

A List of Considerations for New Born Babies PDF Print E-mail

No matter how prepared you think you might be, caring for a new baby is going to require all your time and energy. The more you prepare for this ahead of time the easier it can be.

One thing a new mother can do to help keep her baby healthy and strong is to breastfeed it. In order to ensure a new mom has enough milk she should try to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. She will also need to increase her water consumption in order to avoid running out of milk.

Some of the obvious items that parents will want to have are baby clothes, toys, a baby crib, stroller and a car seat. With all of these things in place, you will be equipped for anything and that will save you time in the end. As time will be something you grow to cherish having all these items are crucial.

No not buy toys for your baby that they can fit in their mouth for rick that they may swallow them. Toys should also be made of non hazardous material and ideally have no small parts that would potentiall break off.

For crib, there are three main types of cribs: canopy crib, standard crib and convertible crib. Make sure you buy a crib that passes the US standard test for the safety for your child. You should consider buying a crib that is made from hard wood which is more durable than other kinds of cribs.

For car seat, this item is really important because it can keep your baby safe in the event of a car accident. Be sure that you keep your baby in the backseat instead of beside the driver.

Parents sometimes need to consider more than one type of stroller. Maybe you have one stroller that you use in your neighborhood for jogging and another that you keep in your car for when you go to the grocery store. Whatever your situation is you will surely need at least one stroller to help you with transporting your baby.

Some of the most important baby clothes are a hat and socks. They will keep your baby both warm and comfortable. Forgetting to dress your baby appropriately could cause an unwanted cold.

You should keep your baby room clean in order to keep your baby healthy. The most important thing is you should have fun while you treat your baby with love and care.

How Reliable is Free Stop Smoking Hypnosis? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Grampa Starling
Saturday, 18 April 2009 09:59
As more and more smokers seek to quit their habit we see quite a few different stop smoking aids appearing on the market from free quit smoking gum to nicotine patches, etc. One method few people think about though is by the use of free stop smoking hypnosis aids such as CD's or downloads from the computer.

One reason for this could be that they wonder whether or not free quit smoking hypnosis would really work for them.

Using Hypnosis to Quit Smoking

If you are interested in trying hypnosis to cure your habit but are concerned about the efficacy of self hypnosis there are still options open to you that needn't involve cost.

Quite a few therapists offer free quit smoking hypnosis, with the same sessions as if you were to pay for it, Obviously, you would need to find a hypnotist willing to offer these services for free and this would involve some research on your part.

The sessions, whether paid or free, generally all start with a consultation, to discuss your smoking habit – how heavy it is, how long you've been smoking, whether you're experiencing any smoking related health problems, etc.

During any free stop smoking hypnosis program you should be offered different hypnotherapy techniques, positive affirmations and suggestions in order to help you kick the habit and stop smoking permanently.

Yes, I did say, “permanently”

You see, with hypnosis for smoking, once you quit you need never start up again; unless of course you make a conscious decision to do so, but why would you do that when you've just tried so hard to give up in the first place?.

The use of smoking hypnotherapy involves reconfiguring your brain, your very way of thinking, about cigarettes, so that in the future you no longer fall victim to the cravings and so won’t start up smoking again.

It's important to point out though, and only fair that I do so, that any quit smoking hypnosis classes, whether free or paid for, don't come with a cast iron guarantee of success!

Although these sessions have proven to be incredibly effective with most subjects they don't work for everyone. At the very least you will be required to input some will-power or desire in order to achieve your desired results but as you're already seeking help we can usually assume your desire in this is assured.

It may be, though, that you need to combine hypnosis with other methods of stopping smoking such as the patches or gum.

If you're really serious about giving up smoking (and you should be – not only for the sake of your own health but also of those around you), then the most important thing is that you at least give something a go in an effort to stop smoking.

Continuing to smoke will inevitably put you at increased health risks. You may not yet realise it but each and every factory produced cigarette is packed full of potentially harmful chemicals. Do you really want to keep on pumping them in to your body day after day?

If you've read this far I can assume you are serious about quitting smoking and quite interested now in the use of hypnosis. You may be interested in my sister website: HypnoticEffects where all aspects of hypnosis are discussed including suggestions for downloads and CD's, etc.

Top 6 Coping Strategies for New Parents in Tough Times PDF Print E-mail
    Written by Christy Cuellar-Wentz
    Sunday, 29 March 2009 08:07
    by Christy Cuellar-Wentz

A volatile stock market, unpredictably disastrous weather, home mortgage crises and tightening credit crunch all add up to increasingly difficult home environments. Some of the most at-risk members of our population include pregnant and postpartum mothers. They are already coping with tremendous hormone and brain chemistry changes, and have a biological imperative to establish a safe haven for their new charges.

Creating a stable home environment may be the "impossible dream" during rapidly changing world events. Parents may find themselves overwhelmed and under prepared, wanting to do right by their families but struggling to find the resources to do so. Babies and young children are acutely sensitive to the stress level in parents. Helping mothers and fathers find some mental and physical relief can provide a more secure, calming environment for the developing minds and bodies of their children. Here's what to do:

    1. Focus on the moment. There may be a hundred problems that you need to cope with. You cannot possibly tend to them all at once. Just focus on one at a time. Most importantly, check if you and your family are safe for now. If not, ask yourself what you need to do to assure the most basic needs are met, and follow through. If you are safe, even for the night, breathe and allow a moment of gratitude for even the smallest blessings.
    2. Allow Yourself to Be Honest. You may need to temporarily suppress some emotions for the sake of being able to move forward in the world, but ignoring your feelings completely can be dangerous. Give yourself permission to feel whatever is going on inside. Do an internal check. Are you mad, glad, sad, scared or some combination of these?
    3. Connect. You are not alone. Connecting with other people and sharing your story can help you feel sane again and bring comfort to everyone involved. If you can do this face-to-face, great. If not, go online and find support groups to connect with there. Quality matters more than quantity. Connecting with just one person or group of people who can be present and supportive can do a world of good.
    4. Nurture Yourself. Ask yourself what you love with each of your senses. What do you love to hear? What do you love to taste? What do you love to feel? What do you love to smell? What do you love to see? Write your answers down, and be creative. Spa days, massages and fancy dinners are great, but the object here is to find small but meaningful ways to nurture yourself every day. You may be surprised to find the variety of simple, inexpensive ways to bring pleasure through multiple senses. A cup of favorite tea or coffee can nourish your sense of taste, smell, touch, and even sight if you take the time to focus and enjoy it. Stroking a cat or dog can be tremendously soothing, nourishing your sense of touch and bringing a sense of connection at the same time. It is possible to become aware of beauty even in some of the harshest environments.
    5. Cover the Essentials. Eating, sleeping, breathing and drinking water may not seem significant, but they are. Attending to these essentials each day will provide you with the energy to make it through to smoother times.
    6. Ask Others for Help. This is no sign of weakness. On the contrary, you prove your competence by asking for help for yourself and your family when you need it. Do you need help finding information, food, housing, resources, or a supportive network? People might not know what you need unless you tell them. Don't let your pride interfere. Give yourself permission to ask for help and increase your chances of finding the resources you need.

What to Look for When Selecting a College PDF Print E-mail
    Written by Mary Poodel

    by Mary Poodel

There are many different college types available to students these days such as smaller private schools and extremely large state-run institutions. When perusing your options, you may be unsure as to how you can choose the best one. The following will provide some tips for doing so.

First, figure out what you want in a college. By knowing this upfront, you will be led in the right direction throughout your search. Once you have a good idea of what you are looking for, the search for the best college can begin.

The specifics regarding the best college should start with the major you intend on pursuing throughout school. Certain colleges are known for specific majors, therefore you want to attend a school where your major will be highly touted.

Secondly, think of what extracurricular activities you will possibly engage in while at college. By having this factor in mind you can narrow down the options to the best school which offers these activities to its students.

The location of the school will also help to sway your decision. If you want to go far away from home, focus your search out of state. On the other hand, if you want a school within one or two hours from your family, narrow down the options that way.

When reviewing college choices, also factor in the housing situation at the potential schools. As some students want to live on campus and others will prefer living off campus, you want to ensure that housing in either area is to your liking and available.

The competence of the professors should also be a concern for prospective students. You want to be certain that the professors which teach at your school are well versed in the subject matter and of a competent nature. This can be figured out by reviewing some of their bios.

Lastly, ask about the cost for attending the colleges. Make sure that you inquire about housing, book costs and fees in addition to tuition. This will help to narrow down the options and aid you in picking the best college.

Flowers for Alzheimer's disease? PDF Print E-mail
    Written by Tracy Anderson

    by Tracy Anderson

Flowers are usually given to sick people to make them feel better and brighten up their day. A drug made from compounds found in daffodils appears to be doing the same for people with Alzheimer's disease.

Although it is not a cure for the disease, the drug called galantamine may slow down the development of Alzheimer's disease - a condition that experts say will affect 22 million people worldwide by 2025.

Galantamine is derived from the bulb of the daffodil flower which has been used as a medicine since ancient times.

"Alzheimer's is not the first medicinal use of the daffodil. The bulbs were used in Roman time as the basis of a drink designed to induce vomiting. Plasters for wounds were also made from the bulb material, while the powdered leaves were turned into a syrup to cure catarrh. The hot juice of the bulb was used by Victorians to clean the skin and to clear the ears of wax," revealed Roger Dobson of the Daily Mail.

Galantamine belongs to a class of drugs known as cholinesterase inhibitors. They drugs are usually prescribed in the early and middle stages of the disease.

Cholinesterase inhibitors work by increasing acetylcholine levels in the brain or improving the nerve cells' reaction to this chemical messenger. Patients with Alzheimer's disease normally have low levels of acetylcholine which is important for alertness, memory and thought.

"Galantamine is used to treat mild to moderate confusion (dementia) related to Alzheimer's disease. It does not cure Alzheimer's disease, but it may improve memory, awareness, and the ability to perform daily functions. This medication works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain," according to WebMD.

Common side effects of the drug include nausea and vomiting although not everyone may experience this. Inform your doctor if you have heart problems since heart attacks and strokes have been reported in those taking the drug.

"Studies involving more than 2,000 people with MCI showed a significantly higher rate of death in those who took galantamine, compared with those receiving placebo. Half the deaths in the galantamine group were associated with heart attacks and strokes," warned the Mayo Clinic.

To be on the safe side, consult your doctor before taking this or any other drug. That way, you'll get the most out of the medicines you're taking.

As research continues to make life better for people with Alzheimer's disease, it won't hurt if you send some flowers to a patient.
