John Sergeant with Strictly Come Dancing partner Kristina Rihanoff

John Sergeant’ and professional dance partner, Kristina Rihanoff.

If you live in the UK and have been following Strictly Come Dancing you’re probably aware by now that John Sergeant has pulled out of the show following a string of complaints by the judges who seemed to be getting more and more upset each time he was kept in by the voting public.

If you’re not from the UK and don’t know what the heck I’m talking about, don’t worry - just take my word for it that John (and I’m sure he would agree with me) is not the best dancer to appear on the show by a long long way but the British public, being true to form, love an underdog and John was the underest (I know that’s not a real world but I don’t care!) of all underdogs and so kept voting for him in their thousands.

Teaching Manners To Children - 5 Steps To Consider

By Zach Allred Teaching your children manners can be accomplished when it is done consistently. As parents we all want our children to be well mannered. I know as a father I enjoy compliments from other adults about my children’s behavior. Like you I am sometimes surprised when these compliments come. Here are some guidelines for teaching manners to your children.

  1. Do not try too fast. If you are trying to teach your 2 year old to chew with their mouth closed you may not get very far. Think about the tremendous coordination it takes to do this. When your child is 5 or 6 though, they are ready.

How to Avoid the Scholarship Con Artists

by Amonda Morre Carter

It happens annually. Students and their families are cheated by scholarship scammers…people who promise to help them land scholarships and financial aid they wouldn’t otherwise receive.

It is widely believed that these scammers defraud families out of more than $100 million dollars every academic year.

They do it by preying on families worried about the cost of college, families who know little or nothing about scholarships and financial aid; families who are often easy targets.

The con begins with a letter from a company with a name that makes it appear to be a counselling organization dedicated to assisting students. Of course, the company has no interest in helping anyone.

Remember the Wholly Innocents this Christmastide

Sadly, at least here in the UK, child abuse is once again rearing its ugly head in the news with the court case of the abuse and murder of a seventeen month old baby boy last year. Two men have been found guilty of causing or allowing the death of the 17 month old tot; his mother had already pleaded guilty to allowing or causing his death and awaits sentencing next month.

It was only on the 2nd August last year that police announced they were to drop an investigation which they had launched the previous December into allegations of child abuse against the toddler. At the time his mother was reported as being elated and told social workers she was going home to hug her son and bake cakes. Less than 24 hours later Baby P, as he is known for legal reasons, was dead.

Safety Tips for Baby Strollers

Safety Tips for Baby Stroller Use

Strollers have been used for decades due to the fact that they offer convenience to parents on the move. As with many products on the market that are designed for infants and toddlers, many safety alerts and red flags have been raised.

While it is unfortunate to hear of a baby and/or toddler to be subjected to strollers that may cause injury, and potential death, this information has been used to compile data that will allow parents to know and understand what safety enhancements are most important when selecting baby strollers.

Sexual Predation; Child-proofing Rooms; Breastfeeding - Do you have anything to say?

One of the things I like to do with this blog is to use it as a resource for others and one way of doing just that is by asking my readers for input to queries from journalists requiring info on various topics related to this blog’s sphere of influence.  And so I include today three such requests that, hopefully, at least some of my readers will feel comfortable answering.  Some of the requests have fairly short deadlines so please be aware of that when answering and please only send your input to the address specified and not to this blog.

Stress Relief: Relaxation and a Good Old Massage Should do the Trick

Stress relief: relaxation and a good old massage should do the trick, what do you think?
I came across an article today by a Dr Jeff, a psychologist dealing with stress and how to cope with it. I was going to include this article here as it seemed at first sight to be of significance to students and, hence, on target for my subject matter.
My original intention here was due to the opening paragraph of that article, part of which I do quote here, “Several years ago my wife and I were concerned that students who had significant reading disabilities might show undetected but high levels of stress. We were worried that no one seemed to have done any research on the impact of a reading disability on emotional well-being, specifically stress“.

However, as further reading of the article revealed, stress levels in students with reading difficulties were found to be not a problem afterall. It is, though, a good article and worthy of reading for yourself, especially if you are a sufferer of stress - you can do so here as I have included it in my ‘Articles of Interest’ section of this website.
